Design Focus: Contextual architectural design, economical material selection, and multi-use spatial flexibility.

The Brief

The objective was to design an enclosed, independent outdoor space capable of supporting a diverse range of activities—from entertaining and remote work to fitness and seasonal "camp-outs"—spanning from early spring to late fall. The structure needed to sit harmoniously alongside a mid-1970s traditional home, requiring a careful study of existing design language, material palettes, and scale. Key requirements included provisions for seasonal extension, such as integrated heating, power, and interchangeable storm windows and doors.

Our Approach

Engineering: Since the structure features exposed framing, we treated the structural layout as a visual asset. We utilized laminated timber beams and precision framing to create architectural intrigue without unnecessary cost. A monolithic slab foundation was selected to provide a durable, low-maintenance base for high-traffic use. To manage volume and airflow, we engineered a split-roof frame, which provides natural ventilation and allows for increased ceiling height within a compact footprint.

Design: Taking cues from the split-level and mid-century modern DNA of the primary residence, we developed a massing plan that feels expansive despite the small 225 SF footprint. The material selection prioritizes durability and budget-efficiency while echoing the textures of the original home. By focusing on "honest" detailing, the design bridges the gap between a traditional screened porch and a modern architectural pavilion.

The Result: An Elevated Outdoor Sanctuary

This airy, protected space functions as a versatile "Muskoka Room" that stands independent of the main cottage. By integrating modern services and a high-performance structural shell, we created a flexible environment that remains comfortable across three seasons. The gazebo doesn’t just mimic the existing home—it completes the site’s architectural narrative while offering a dedicated retreat for work and play.
